Estimating the cost of heating a home
A heating estimate is only as useful as the assumptions behind it. Start by recording the system, fuel, expected demand, and rate used for the calculation.
Record the system
Heat pumps, gas boilers, direct electric heaters, and solid-fuel systems have different inputs and efficiencies. Naming the system prevents an average from being mistaken for a property-specific result.
Show the uncertainty
Use a range when weather, occupancy, or future rates are uncertain. A range gives readers a better decision boundary than a single precise-looking number.
Keep the date visible
Rates and guidance change. Date the inputs and link to the source so the estimate can be revisited when a tariff or recommendation changes.
